Book One Project

My idea is an interactive box which the audience can take out the objects while reading to become more attached to the novel. There are very important objects in the box. As you read Thirteen Reasons Why, Clay who is the main character receives a box of tapes from his friend Hannah who committed suicide. Hannah is the narrator throughout the novel. You go through the book and go through each tape wondering why Clay has gotten the tapes and why he is one of the reasons Hannah killed herself. Overall the book is very suspenseful. It hard dealing with a narrator who is dead but I love how the attitudes of each character really shines in this book. I think Thirteen Reason Why is a must read and I think to prove that the objects in my box will make the book actually come to life.

1.      I put a camera in the box because in tape 2 side B you meet Tyler. Hannah realizes that she has a “Peeping Tom”. On every tape is a person and there story for what they did to Hannah for her to kill herself. She realizes that Tyler has been peeking in her bedroom window and taking pictures of her. “So tell me, Tyler, those nights you stood outside my window, was I spontaneous enough for you? Did you catch me in all my natural, unposed…” I think this is the part of the book where you see that Hannah has no boundaries.

2.      I put a simple brown paper bag in the box because in Hannah’s class they have bags at the back of the class that are meant for students to put compliments in. The idea is that if you don’t have enough guts to tell the person face to face you can drop it off in there bag on the way out of class. In the story you find out that Hannah’s compliments have been stolen from Zach Dempsey. The whole meaning of the paper bag was for the audience to pick it up and realize that it is empty and that no one has anything nice to say about them. I think that even though it seems like a little joke that Zach pulled that if you were the one with the empty bag you would be upset.

3.      The hot or not list was made by Alex, he made the list depending on the freshman and senior class. He put Hannah’s name in the hot column and Jessica’s name in the not column. It doesn’t seem like a bad thing but Alex put them against each other so they would get in a fight and not be friends.

4.      This is the Walkman that Clay uses to listen to Hannah’s tapes. The Walkman that Clay uses is his friend’s Tony’s.

5.      The popcorn represents how Clay and Hannah knew each other. They both worked at the movie theater together. Hannah would always work the concessions stands when Clay wasn’t working and he would stop by and check to see what she was doing. Hannah and Clay always had a thing for each other they were both just too shy to admit it.

6.      The seven tapes represent the tapes that Hannah made and that she mailed out to the thirteen people. I think it would be interesting for the audience to hold the tapes and to think about how it feels to know all of the people that made Hannah kill herself. It would make the audience feel like Clay.

  1. Fun idea. I like the objects you chose to represent the story and how specifically you connected them to the book. Good job of explaining how the pack would create empathy for Clay and for Hannah.

I see one quote from the book, are there 2 others I missed?

  2. The idea of a box with significant items inside is very cool because not only are the items symbolic but it relates to the box of tapes in the story. I think everybody has certain items that have caused them joy or pain so being able to see and hold the items that affected the author would definitely enhance the reading experience. I'm not sure 13 Reasons Why sounds like my kind of story but the idea is very cool!
